Gender Advocates Call for Increased Financing to Combat Gender-Based Violence in Nigeria

Stakeholders in the field of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), including gender advocates and the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Hacey Health Initiative, convened to discuss the pressing need for mobilising and augmenting financial resources to effectively prevent and address Gender-Based Violence, particularly in Oyo State.

The advocates issued this call during a Gender Advocate Hangout event themed “Increasing Financing for Preventing and Responding to Gender-Based Violence (GBV)”. The event provided a platform for gender advocates to unite, deliberate on gender-related issues, and exchange strategies and recommendations to enhance their efforts in combating GBV.

In her opening remarks, the Programme Manager of Hacey Health Initiative, Oluwatomi Olunuga, affirmed the NGO’s commitment to building upon the event’s momentum and bolstering support for gender advocates in their pursuit of increased financing for GBV prevention and response. Olunuga emphasised the significance of collaborative endeavours to secure adequate funding for comprehensive interventions, acknowledging the profound impact of GBV on individuals and communities.

The gathering convened over 30 gender advocates who engaged in discussions focused on enhancing financing for GBV response and prevention. Attendees actively participated in constructive dialogues, exploring innovative strategies to mobilise resources, enhance service delivery, and advocate for policy reforms prioritising the eradication of GBV.

Key discussion points included the importance of sustainable funding mechanisms, partnerships with governmental and non-governmental entities, and engagement with the private sector to invest in GBV prevention and response initiatives.

Participants exchanged success stories and lessons learned from their experiences in securing funding and implementing impactful programmes.
