German Football Icon Franz Beckenbauer Dies, Aged 78

Franz Beckenbauer, a legendary figure in German football, has passed away at the age of 78, according to a statement from his family on Monday. Beckenbauer played a pivotal role in football as a player, coach, pundit, and administrator, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.

Beckenbauer led West Germany to victory in the 1974 World Cup and later managed the team to another World Cup triumph in 1990. His illustrious playing career included winning the 1972 European Championship and the 1974 World Cup on home soil. He earned 103 caps for West Germany.

As a player, Beckenbauer was a key figure in Bayern Munich’s dominance, leading the club to three successive European Cups and three Bundesliga titles. He was twice named European Footballer of the Year during his playing career.
