As widely reported on Friday, English club Liverpool has agreed to a record-breaking £116 million ($157 million) deal to acquire Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.
The reigning Premier League champions will pay an initial fee of £100 million, which easily surpasses their previous record expenditure. However, if the performance-related bonuses are met, the total would potentially establish a new British record.
Liverpool’s total investment for the 22-year-old German international could exceed the £115 million that Chelsea agreed to pay Brighton in 2023 for Moises Caicedo, who opted for Chelsea instead of Anfield.

Chelsea signed Midfielder Caicedo for an initial fee of £100 million, which could increase to £115 million.
Striker Darwin Nunez was Liverpool’s most expensive signing in 2022, though the club has not yet paid the full £85 million since he has not fulfilled all the criteria for the additional payments to be triggered.
Manchester City showed interest in Wirtz but reportedly withdrew due to the rising costs associated with the deal.
