In 1957, Kwame Nkrumah announced the independence of Ghana to a massive crowd in Accra, a significant event that altered the course of African history.
The former premier president and then prime minister declared to the crowd that “Ghana, your beloved country, is free forever,” marking the end of years of British colonial rule and making Ghana the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence.
Nkrumah wisely described this moment as the gateway to freedom, which other African countries must follow.
Ghana’s independence triggered a wave of independence movements across Africa and cemented its position in the annals of African history. Notably, Osagyefo Nkrumah recognised that the path to recovery would not be easy and called on the Ghanaian people to work hard towards it. As Ghana celebrates its independence, the question arises: Where does the country stand today, 66 years later, in its pursuit of prosperity?
