Ghana Health Service (GHS) on Saturday announced 790 new cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) disease, bringing total confirmed infections in the country to 74,347.
The GHS said that with 66,333 recoveries, the number of active Covid-19 cases in Ghana stood at 7,509 as of Saturday morning.
Twenty three more Covid-19 patients died from complications arising from the virus, bringing the death toll from the pandemic to 505 in Ghana.
As of Saturday, males constituted 58 percent of the total number of confirmed cases in Ghana, while 42 percent were females.
Ghana expects to receive its first consignment of vaccines in March to start the process of vaccinating the population against the pandemic.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s neighbours, Nigeria, has recorded 10 COVID-19 related deaths in Oyo State, southwest Nigeria.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) also announced that the state recorded 124 new COVID-19 infections, increasing the total number of confirmed cases to 6248.
Prof. Temitope Alonge, the Coordinator, Oyo State COVID-19 Isolation Centres, in a press briefing on Saturday said early evidence indicated that the new variants may be more deadly.
Alonge noted that with the new variants of SARS-CoV-2, (the virus that causes COVID-19), patients may not show symptoms of the virus before they succumb to severe illness or even death.
When people test positive for COVID-19, a thorough examination is important for early detection of any organ dysfunction.
