Police have arrested a man identified as Michael Allotey, at the St. Theresa School polling station in the Okaikwei South Constituency, Accra, for carrying a weapon during Ghana’s ongoing general elections.
A statement from the authorities confirmed that Allotey is in custody and is assisting with investigations.
“The Ghana Police Service has arrested one person, Michael Allotey, for possession of weapon at the St. Theresa School polling station in the Okaikwei South Constituency in Accra.
“He is currently in custody assisting in the Police investigation,” the Ghana Police Service said in its release.
In a separate incident, an official of the Electoral Commission has been reportedly arrested in Kintampo South.
The suspect, identified as Dery Joseph, was apprehended for allegedly issuing approximately 15 ballot papers that excluded Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and first presidential candidate, to voters.
Ghanaians are voting today, December 7, 2024, to elect a new President and Members of Parliament across 276 constituencies in the country’s 16 regions.
This is the ninth election under Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
Voting began at 7:00 am, with polling stations across the nation experiencing large turnouts. Voters were seen queuing patiently to cast their ballots in what has so far been a generally peaceful process.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s Presidential Candidate, cast his vote in Walewale, while his running mate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, voted in the Manhyia South Constituency in the Ashanti Region.
Polling stations are scheduled to close at 5:00 pm, with the nation awaiting further updates from this critical election.
