The Ghana Football Association have not thought about canceling the 2019/2020 Ghana Premier League season, this was a statement from the Ghana FA’s Communications Director Henry Asante Twum.
There were reports in the media suggesting the GFA is to announce the cancelation of the 2019/2020 football league season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
A post on the GFA social media handle thanking its sponsors for supporting them and stating that they would love to work with them next season started the speculation of the league being canceled.
Henry Asante Twum reacted to the speculation saying the news should be disregarded as it is not true.
“Disregard any news circulating on various platforms that claims the league has been cancelled. We have never thought of that. What we posted on our online handles is just to show appreciation to our sponsors for standing behind us even in this period where no sporting activity is encouraged”, Henry Asante Twum said.
“I don’t know why people will twist a simple statement as such”.
Earlier in the week, Henry Asante Twum had said that the GFA is in constant touch with the Ministry of Health and Ghana Health Service (GHS) and will seek their advice before deciding the future of the 2019/2020 Ghana Premier League.
“There hasn’t been a moment we have taken a decision without contacting the Ministry of Health and Ghana Health Service. We are constantly in touch with authorities on the way forward”, he said.
“The GFA Medical committee has also been in touch with the Executive Council to give guidance and direction to the clubs.
“So, we haven’t done anything in isolation. The GFA has also been engaging the health authorities and what we need now is patience”, he added.
The Ghana football association has asked the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for a two-week time frame to decide the fate of the domestic competitions while they engage with key stakeholders for the next couple of weeks before a decision is finally made on the fate of the 2019/2020 Ghana Premier League football season.
