Nigeria have been drawn against Ghana in an interesting matchup for the last phase of the Qatar 2022 World Cup Qualifiers. The Black Stars, who last week were eliminated from the African Cup of Nations will face their agelong rivals on the 23rd of March.
Ghana will host Nigeria in Accra before leaving for Nigeria for the final game of the qualifiers. Both teams have a history of clashes with Nigeria winless against their rivals in four games. The last time the Super Eagles played against Ghana in a competitive fixture at the semifinal of the Angola 2010 African Cup of Nations, the game ended in a 1-0 win courtesy of Asamoah Gyan.
In other draws for the final segment of the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Senegal will face Egypt, Algeria have been drawn against Cameroon, Morocco will face DR Congo, and Tunisia will face Mali.
The seeded teams will play away in the first games of the qualifiers before playing in a conclusive fixture at home.
Algeria and Ghana have been eliminated from the ongoing AFCON in Cameroon and will hope for a change in fortunes as they fight for a place at the Mundial.
The Democratic Republic of Congo face a tall order against one of Africa’s best sides, Morocco as they also failed to qualify for the ongoing AFCON. One of Liverpool’s Mo Salah or Sadio Mane will automatically miss out of the competition as they’ve been drawn to face each other.
The draws for the qualifiers was conducted by CAF’s Director of Competitions, Sampson Adamu, hosted by Mimi Fawaz and also had former Togolese international and a participant at the 2006 World Cup, Emmanuel Adebayor and former Senegalese star and a member of the Senegalese record-making 2002 generation, El-Hadj Diouf in attendance.
