Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, said on Sunday he had accepted defeat in the presidential election held on Saturday, December 8, 2024.
Bawumia stated that he had called his opponent, John Mahama, to congratulate him.
In a public address from his residence hours after results began trickling in, Bawumia acknowledged his opponent’s victory and expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for the opportunity to serve as Vice President and presidential candidate.
“The people of Ghana have spoken; they have voted for change at this time, and we respect it with all humility,” he said at a press conference.
Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the provisional results from the party’s internal collation, which indicate a victory for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its candidate, former President John Dramani Mahama.
