A multiple-car collision on the desert road of Cairo-Alexandria in Egypt killed 15 people and injured seven others on Tuesday.

The accident occurred near the city of Amreya in the Northern Egypt capital, state-run news agency, MENA, confirmed.

According to local authorities, ambulances and security personnel rushed to the accident scene immediately and the injured were sent to the hospital for medical attention.

While additional investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the accident, traffic officers are trying to restore traffic flow in the area.

Thousands of people lose their lives to road accidents yearly in Egypt, due to overspeeding, poorly maintained roads, and negligent enforcement of traffic laws in the North African country.

According to a Global Status Report on Road Safety in Egypt, the World Health Organisation ranked Egypt as a country with one of the highest rates of mortality due to road traffic crashes.

A data from the report said around 12,000 Egyptians lose their lives every year as a result of a road traffic accident.

It stated that while thousands of victims are non-fatally injured, some result to long-term disability.
