The presidency of the Democratic Republic of Congo provoked monumental hilarity across the country after issuing an announcement promoting a deceased general.

Several tweeps shared the clips of the announcements, with many wondering how the error happened unnoticed.

In 2011, General Floribert Kisembo Bahemuka was killed during an operation, but his name was listed among military leaders slated for retirement or promotion by President Felix Tshisekedi on Monday.

The deceased was appointed to lead military operations in the northern Equateur province which borders neighbouring Republic of Congo. It is relatively peaceful and has not experienced major security threats compared to those in the eastern region.

Bahemuka was one of the five former warlords from the Ituri district in northeastern Congo. They were alleged to have committed serious human rights violations including war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The DR Congo army confirmed the veracity of the list, however, the presidency stated that a “data operator” was responsible for the error.
