Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White has revealed he told new England manager Thomas Tuchel he deserved a place in the squad for his first international duty after initially being left out.
Despite his standout performances that helped Forest secure a third-place spot in the Premier League, Gibbs-White was notably absent from Tuchel’s squad announcement.
However, following an injury to Cole Palmer, Gibbs-White was called up at the last minute, much to his relief. “I was upset and a little disappointed,” Gibbs-White admitted to the BBC. “But I respected Tuchel’s decision. I said I felt I had done enough to earn the call-up, but he’s the manager, and I respect that.”
The 25-year-old had made his England debut under caretaker manager Lee Carsley, but his path to regular inclusion in Tuchel’s squad will be tough, with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, and Palmer in competition for places.

Gibbs-White expressed his excitement upon receiving the call-up, sharing that Tuchel had reached out personally, saying, “Are you still upset, or do you want to come and train with us tomorrow?” To which Gibbs-White enthusiastically replied, “Of course, I’d love to join and train with the boys.”
As Tuchel’s reign begins with a World Cup qualifier against Albania on Friday and a match against Latvia on March 24, Gibbs-White has praised the manager for taking the time to build a bond with players ahead of their first meeting at St George’s Park. “It was really good for him to start that relationship before meeting us,” Gibbs-White said.
