Gift of the Givers, a South African charity, has announced that it will deliver humanitarian aid to Ukraine, where the UN estimates that over one million citizens have fled the Russian invasion.
In a statement, the charity said it will “provide emergency medical and non-medical assistance to front line facilities and internally displaced civilians inside Ukraine”.
“Discussions with various pharmaceutical companies, medical aid societies and corporate companies wanting to support the initiative are underway,” it said.
Founder of the NGO, Dr. Imtiaz Sooliman, stated that the intervention is necessitated by the call for assistance from South Africans stuck in Ukraine. Some South Africans are married to Ukrainians and some are residents in the country.
Some of the aid will be transferred to Kharkiv, where Russian shells have been falling on residential areas.
The repatriation of South African students who wish to return home will also be supported by Gift of the Givers.
The organisation has previously supplied humanitarian aid to Syria’s front lines. Those interested in supporting the humanitarian effort of the organisation and assist in the repatriation of South Africans can make deposits into the account Gift of the Givers, Standard Bank, Pietermaritzburg, Account number 052137228, Branch Code 057525, reference: “Ukraine”.
