Sudan Donors to Meet as 72-hour Truce Enters Second Day (News Central TV)

As the 72-hour ceasefire between Sudan’s warring army and Rapid Support Forces, RSF enters its second day, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is set to convene international donors’ conference on Sudan in Geneva today.

The Qatari foreign ministry said on Sunday that the session will “support the humanitarian response in Sudan and the region”.

The event in organised in conjunction with, Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Germany. Reports indicate that Sudan was “completely calm” on Sunday, the first day of a new 72-hour ceasefire between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The momentary suspension of fighting between the army and the RSF commenced at 06:00 EAT and was announced on Saturday by mediators Saudi Arabia and the USA.

In a statement on Sunday, the UN declared that about 1.7 million people were internally displaced in Sudan as a result of the crisis.

More than half a million people have sought refuge in neighbouring Eritrea, South Sudan and Chad, with some moving as far as Kenya.

The AU, UN and other international observers have expressed concern over the rapidly worsening and deplorable situation in Darfur where the conflict has taken on an ethnic dimension.
