In preparation of the impending 2023 Presidential elections, Google has developed a brand-new website called the Nigeria Elections Trends Hub. Through Google Trends, this portal will give Nigerians a way to look up and learn about popular topics relating to the presidential and vice presidential candidates, parties, and concerns.
The page, which can be accessed on the Google Trends website, enables visitors to contrast the presidential contenders’ search popularity with the most popular queries being asked about them. The site includes maps and graphs that show the candidates’ search interests throughout a 30-day period.
This is a part of a larger Google initiative to support the elections in 2023, which also includes training for new and media publishers on how to use YouTube to effectively tell election stories and training from the Google News Lab to assist journalists in learning how to use search and other Google tools for better storytelling, including data visualisation, verification, and fact-checking.
Google’s objective to organise and make the world’s information broadly accessible and helpful is more relevant than ever as Nigeria celebrates 24 years of democracy in the forthcoming elections.
“We want Nigerians to be empowered with information during the upcoming elections, so we’re organising information to make it easy for voters to learn more about the candidates through the eyes of Google Trends,” said Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Communications and Public Affairs Manager for West Africa.
He added; “More accessible and useful political information improves the political process and leads to greater citizen participation.”
The Nigeria Elections Trends Hub will empower people to participate more actively in politics and make better judgments at the polls. Kola-Ogunlade continued, “We are empowering voters so that they are not just observing from a distance, but participating, engaging with, and impacting the political process in a democratic way.
The Nigeria Elections Trends Hub is one of many projects Google is working on to promote the 2023 elections, including training for new media publishers and assistance for journalists to help them tell more interesting stories. Google is committed to making search useful for Nigerians.
