The Governor of Jigawa State, Umar Namadi, has declared a 24-hour curfew following the violence that ensued after the #EndBadGovernance protest on August 1, 2024.
In a state broadcast on Thursday night, Namadi announced that the curfew restriction would take immediate effect.
The Governor stated that on Friday, the curfew would be relaxed between 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to allow Muslims to participate in the Jumm’at congregational prayers.
Namadi explained that the decision was prompted by the looting spree that characterised the #EndBadGovernance protest in the state.
“As a result of this, we are introducing a 24-hour curfew in Jigawa State, which will remain in place until we have reviewed the situation with security agencies and deem it appropriate to relax,” Namadi stated.
“Today, we woke up to a series of protests that are not part of our culture and tradition. We believe that this protest will not solve the issues people are demanding.
“Only Allah can rescue you from hardship. Therefore, protesting is not and will not be the solution. We have witnessed how people use young boys to vandalise and steal property.
“This behaviour is not part of our culture and tradition. As a government, we cannot allow this to continue unchecked.
“For the sake of Friday prayers tomorrow, we will relax the curfew from 12:00 noon to 2:30 p.m. to allow people to go to the mosque and pray for the state and nation. After 2:30 p.m., the curfew will resume, and we urge everyone to comply and stay at home.”
He also expressed gratitude to Muslim scholars and traditional rulers for their efforts in discouraging participation in the nationwide hunger protest in Jigawa State.
