Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on food processing companies to adopt biodegradable and compostable packaging materials to promote environmental sustainability. He made this appeal during the 11th edition of PROPAK West Africa 2024: Smart Packaging Conference, held at the Landmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Represented by the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade, and Investment, Mrs. Folashade Ambrose Medebem, the governor emphasised the significant role the packaging and processing industries play in economic growth. He urged industry leaders to lead the shift towards eco-friendly practices that align with global sustainability goals.
He stressed that the conference’s focus on sustainable packaging and reducing food waste was vital for Nigeria’s economic and environmental health. Highlighting Nigeria’s growing population and the importance of food security, the governor pointed out that inadequate packaging and storage lead to the loss of nearly 40% of food produced in the country before it reaches consumers.
Governor Sanwo-Olu called for immediate action from stakeholders, urging the adoption of biodegradable and sustainable packaging technologies and collaboration across industries to manage plastic use responsibly.
Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), also addressed the gathering, drawing attention to the global issue of food waste. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), approximately one-third of the food produced globally is either lost or wasted, which has serious environmental and economic implications. This is particularly concerning in Africa, where around 20% of the population suffers from undernourishment.
Gbadegesin outlined Lagos State’s initiatives to combat plastic waste, including the recent ban on single-use plastics like styrofoam. He noted that this is part of the state’s broader strategy to encourage sustainable practices in the food industry. In addition, the government is intensifying efforts to educate stakeholders on modern packaging, storage, and transportation techniques for agricultural produce.
Gbadegesin highlighted the urgent need to transition from conventional plastics to sustainable alternatives that protect both products and the environment.
Segun Ajayi, Director General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), emphasised that the event presented an opportunity to shape a future where everyone has access to nutritious food through innovative packaging solutions. He reaffirmed MAN’s commitment to putting consumer interests first.
Other key speakers at the event included Mr Koffi Essuman, Vice President of the World Packaging Organisation; George Pearson, Regional Director of Afrocet Montgomery; and Ahmed Omeh, President of the African Packaging Organisation, who all stressed the importance of sustainable packaging in addressing food security and environmental issues.
