Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, during a recent media parley on April 18, addressed internal issues within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), particularly surrounding the debate on coalition support.
Wike criticised members of the Governors’ Forum who oppose and support coalition efforts, questioning their sincerity. He cited a recent exchange with Governor Seyi Makinde following Makinde’s comments on Politics Today on Channels TV, suggesting the governor had not been entirely honest with himself.
Reflecting on PDP’s loss in the 2023 elections, Wike attributed the party’s downfall to impunity. He warned that if such behaviours persist; especially within the Governors’ Forum—the PDP risks repeating the same mistakes in 2027.

Drawing from his own experience as a former governor, Wike acknowledged that similar decisions were taken in the past, but he emphasised that precedent doesn’t make those actions justifiable.
He firmly condemned any attempt by the Governors’ Forum to act beyond its role, describing it as a mere pressure group without constitutional authority to perform functions designated to the National Working Committee. In particular, he criticised the forum’s interference in appointing a new National Secretary, noting that the current secretary has neither resigned nor been removed through due process.
Wike stressed that such appointments are to be made through proper electoral channels at the national convention and influenced—not dictated—by stakeholders.
On the upcoming Anambra elections, he reminded party members that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) only recognises documents signed by either the National Chairman or National Secretary.
He urged all PDP members to prioritise the unity and growth of the party above personal interests, stating that collective success depends on sincerity and genuine commitment to the party’s future.
In closing, Wike reiterated that the Governors’ Forum is not a constitutionally recognised organ of the party and must not overstep its bounds.
