Guinea Junta Begins Transition Process to Elections

Guinea’s junta set up an 80-member council Saturday to act as parliament as the country transitioned to elections following a September coup that ousted President Alpha Conde.

Dansa Kourouma, a prominent civil society activist and election expert, is set to lead the National Transitional Council (CNT), which would be responsible for agreeing on the date for the next elections, according to the decree.

The overthrow of Conde was denounced by Guinea’s neighbours and international partners, and the country was expelled from the African Union and the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

After two coups in Mali and one in Chad, this was the fourth coup in West and Central Africa within two years.

Conde had angered his opponents by changing the constitution to allow himself to run for a third term.
