Guinea’s military junta has ordered the reopening of airports in the country, barely twenty-fours after announcing the closure of borders, following a coup to depose Alpha Conde as President.
Conde was held by the Guinean Special Forces, led by Lt. Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya after sporadic gunshots were fired at the Presidential Palace in Conakry, the nation’s capital.
The President was taken away by the military, while the constitution was dissolved. The military Junta led by Doumbouya, a former French Foreign Legionnaire also saw Ministers lose their seats as they’re replaced by Garrison Commanders. They’ve also been asked to submit their vehicles and are not authorized to travel without the permission of then junta.
Guinea’s new military government has been condemned by the AU, EU, US and ECOWAS, as they’re advised to stick to a healthy political atmosphere that encourages stability.
Conde was President between 2010 and 2020, and had unconstitutionally earned a third term victory in 2020 in an election dubbed as a fraud in the country, and one that saw many people die.
