Guinea’s new Bauxite railway readies for operation

Guinea’s new $3 billion railway line will be ready for operation in June 2021.

The railway line is expected to transport the country’s mining ore, Bauxite.

Guinea derives most of its income from the exploitation of mines such as bauxite, making it the 3rd largest producer in the world.

The railway service will transport and process the ore for export. The bauxite ore will be processed at an alumina refinery to be built in the Boké special economic zone, a city close to the Guinea-Bissau border.

The project also aims to exploit new bauxite deposits in the Santou and Houda region that falls 250 km north of the capital, Conakry.

SMB-Winning consortium will operate the railway for 33 years, after which it will be handed over to the state on a public-private partnership.
