Gundogan Rejoins Man City on One-Year Deal

Ilkay Gundogan re-signed for Manchester City on Friday, saying he was back at the “best club in the world.” He had previously been with Barcelona.

During his first stint at City, the former German international won 12 major trophies, including five Premier League titles and the Champions League, but left the English champions to join Barcelona just over a year ago.

The 33-year-old and the Catalan giants reportedly decided to void his contract after just one season to make room for a one-year return to the Etihad.

“I’m incredibly happy,” Gundogan said in a City statement. “Happy to see the teammates, the staff, and the people I had a fantastic time with over seven years. It was a very successful time. There were many ups and a few downs, but in general, it was an incredible experience.

“When you leave this place like I did last year, you spend a year away and start to appreciate the place even more. You realise what you had. You realise how amazing that time was.

“You realise how big the club is — the best club in the world.” The midfielder said.

Gundogan’s return is a timely boost for City, and he could go straight into the squad for Saturday’s clash against Ipswich. Spanish midfielder Rodri is still not match-fit after his injury in the Euro 2024 final.

“Most of the time, the managers say until the transfer window finishes, anything can happen, and this is the real proof,” said City boss Pep Guardiola. “It was a complete surprise.”

Guardiola brought in Gundogan as his first player when they joined the team in 2016. He scored 60 goals in 304 games and will provide Guardiola’s team depth and experience as they aim for a record fifth consecutive Premier League title.

In his sole season in Spain, Gundogan scored five goals and provided 14 assists, but Barca failed to win a trophy.
