Gunmen Attack Police HQ, Correctional Service in Owerri, Imo state

At least 1 person has been confirmed dead in an attack by Gunmen on the Federal Prison and Police Command headquarters in Owerri, Imo State. This attack occurred in the early hours of today, beforeý the hoodlums set the facilities ablaze.

Some inmates in the prison were said to have been broken free by the gunmen. The lifeless body of a suspected inmate who was hit by stray bullet while trying to escape was visibly seen on the ground right in front of the correctional centre.

The gunmen also razed the Imo State Police Command headquarters in Owerri and burnt almost all the vehicles parked at the command headquarters.No fewer than 50 cars were set ablaze in the fracas.

They started the attack at about 1:00 am up util 3:00 am while while singing solidarity songs at the Government House Roundabout for about 30 minutes before attacking the facilities.

The Public Relations Officer of the Service, James Madugba, while speaking to journalists pointed out that the authorities were still trying to get the accurate data of inmates who escaped and the level of devastation caused.

He pledged to share details about the attack will be as soon as accurate information and data is collected.

No figure has been given on the number of casualties although there was a gun battle between the police and the gunmen.
