Some gunmen on Monday attacked the Umunze Police Station in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, setting the facility ablaze and killing two police officers.
The assailants used improvised explosives and fired continuously, causing significant damage to the station as fire consumed parts of it. Two police officers on duty were killed during the gun battle while trying to fend off the attackers.
Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, noting that the bodies of the fallen officers had been recovered and taken to a morgue.
Ikenga also reported that a joint security team, including the police, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, civil defence, and other agencies, had recovered five unexploded improvised explosives and was actively pursuing the armed secessionist group responsible for the attack.
He added that Commissioner of Police CP Nnaghe Obono Itam had visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment to strengthen and review security measures. Ikenga urged anyone with information that could aid the investigation to come forward, assuring that all such information would be handled with the highest level of confidentiality.
