Gunmen Invade Kwara Palace, Kill Monarch and Abduct His Wife

The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a traditional ruler, General Segun Aremu (rtd), and the abduction of his wife by some yet-to-be-identified armed men in Kwara state.

The gunmen reportedly stormed the palace of Olukoro of Koro in Ekiti local government area of the state on Thursday night. After killing the community monarch, the armed men kidnapped his wife along with two others whose identities are yet to be disclosed.

Police Spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, said “immediate and intensive investigations are underway to apprehend those criminals for this reprehensible act.”

Ejire-Adeyemi who confirmed the incident early Friday morning, said security has been stepped up in the koro community to ensure the safety of residents.

“We assure the public that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice swiftly.

“Security measures in the koro community have been intensified, tactical teams are being mobilised to beef up security to ensure the safety and well-being of residents”.

The Spokeswoman also relayed words from CP Victor Olaiya, urging residents to remain calm while the situation was being addressed. According to her, the CP “urged the public to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative as we work tirelessly to unravel this matter; arrest and charge the culprits to court.

What the Kwara State Governor Said

Reacting to the incident, the Kwara state Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq described the gunmen’s actions as “reckless, shocking, and abominable”.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, Governor AbdulRazaq urged security agencies to intensify efforts to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and made to pay for their crimes.

The Governor also condoled with the people of Koro.

“We will certainly get the perpetrators and ensure that this is their last crime against humanity.

“My profound condolences go to the people of Koro. Our hearts are broken, and we stand by them at this time and always” the governor said.
