Gunmen on motorbikes have killed not less than 60 residents in the Zuru area of Kebbi State, Northern Nigeria.
Sources disclose that the killed victims are members of vigilante groups who were chasing after the gunmen.
The incident is one of the worst involving community-based vigilante organisations formed to combat armed gangs in the country’s northern area.
During the attack, the gunmen seized cattle and kidnapped a number of people.
When they were ambushed, the vigilantes had gathered from at least five villages to rescue the animals and abductees.
The Kebbi State Police PRO Nafi’u Abubakar confirmed the incident and said security operatives are still gathering details on the exact number of casualties recorded but over 60 residents were killed.
Northern Nigeria has witnessed a spate of insecurity in the last two years accompanied by kidnapping, cattle rustling, and mass killings.
