Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Gutierres was stunned by the killing of civilians in Mali as he expressed deep condolences.
At least 132 civilians were killed last weekend by extremist groups in central Mali, the government announced on Monday.
The villages of Diallassagou, Dianweli, Deguessagou surrounding areas in the Bankass circle were attacked by the terrorists.
The massacres were attributed to members of the Katiba du Macina (Macina Liberation Front) of (Fulani preacher) Amadou Kouffa.
“The Secretary-General is shocked and outraged by reports that at least 100 civilians have been killed in attacks reportedly perpetrated by extremist groups against several villages in the Bandiagara region, central Mali, on 18 and 19 June,” the United Nations said in a statement.
“The Secretary-General expresses his deep condolences to the families of the victims as well as to the people of Mali. He condemns these attacks in the strongest terms and calls on the Malian authorities to swiftly investigate them and bring the perpetrators to justice,”
Mali’s insurgency is one of the worst in Africa as it has lasted a decade with shelling of soldiers and civilians a constant episode. With ties to France since severed and Russian private security agents now drafted in, not much has changed.
Col. Assimi Goita, the nation’s junta leader has declared a three-day national mourning.
