The website of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc (GTBank), a leading Nigerian financial institution, was hacked on Wednesday night.
Customers reported their inability to access the site on social media, despite multiple attempts to log on to www.gtbank.com. The site returned error messages at around 10:30 PM on Wednesday.
According to platforms that analyse domain information, the incident occurred shortly after the domain name was renewed for another five years, from August 13, 2024, to March 21, 2029.
A cybersecurity expert suggested that the bank’s login credentials might have been compromised, rather than the domain address itself being stolen for resale.
As of the time of this report, the bank has not issued an official response.
