President of Haiti Jovenal Moise has been shot dead by unidentified assailants in his private residence overnight.
Moise’s wife Martine Marie Etienne Joseph sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical attention. In a statement by Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph Wednesday, he assured the country that
“All measures are being taken to guarantee the continuity of the state and to protect the nation.”
The Caribbean nation has been battling politically linked crises in the face of worsening humanitarian crisis, food shortages, and fears of widespread violence.
The opposition accused Moise this year of seeking to install a dictatorship by overstaying his tenure and becoming more authoritarian – charges he denied.
