Zimbabwe’s largest city and capital, Harare has announced a planned 24-hour complete shutdown of Morton Jaffray and Warren Control Waterworks, for the purpose of carrying out turnaround maintenance.

Harare City Council Acting Town Clerk Engineer Phakamile Moyo in a circular said the shutdown will be from 4 PM on Friday 6 August 2021, to 4 PM on Saturday 7 August 2021. The statement read:

“We advise that there will be a complete shutdown of Morton Jaffray and Warren Control Waterworks on Friday 6 August 2021 from 1600hours to Saturday 7 August at 1600hours.

The shutdown is to allow for the cleaning of suction pipes at Warren Control Pump Station, repairs on a clarifier and maintenance on four critical trunk mains.

The repairs will result in the reduction of physical water losses currently obtaining in the system.

Residents are encouraged to use water sparingly during this time.”

Ministers J.Gumbo & O. Chidawu paid a visit to Morton Jaffray water plant & Warren waterworks in April 2021 to assess the current state of the plant and progress on the plant rehabilitation works.

Morton Jaffray Water Works complex has three plants and is fed by Darwendale and Lake Chivero, while four pumps supply Warren Control and Lonchivar reservoirs with about 1300 megalitres each. Harare’s water crisis remains perennial for the local authority and this has seen some suburbs going for years without water.
