British-Irish actor Michael Gambon, best known for playing Albus Dumbledore in six of the eight “Harry Potter” films, has died in hospital at the age of 82.
Speaking on behalf of his wife, Anne Miller, and son Fergus, his agent Clair Dobbs said “We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon.”
“Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia.”
The statement concluded, “We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love.”
For nearly five decades Gambon’s career secured him four BAFTAs, two RTS Awards and an Olivier. He died from pneumonia, his family announced Thursday.
He took over the role of Dumbledore following the death of the original actor, Richard Harris.
Gambon first appeared on stage in a production of “Othello” in Dublin at the Gates Theatre in 1962. He was knighted for his sterling roles in the entertainment industry in 1998.
