Health Alert Issued Due to Blowing Dust in Gambia

Health authorities in The Gambia have issued a public alert in response to days of widespread dust affecting many parts of the country, including the capital, Banjul.

The health ministry warned of the potential health risks associated with prolonged exposure to dust, including chronic breathing and lung problems. The statement emphasised that fine particles of airborne dust could penetrate the lower respiratory tract, enter the bloodstream, and affect internal organs, leading to cardiovascular disorders such as stroke.

As a precautionary measure, the public has been advised to stay indoors as much as possible. Those who need to go outside have been urged to wear masks and glasses, and staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is recommended.

Motorists are cautioned to be careful on the roads due to the limited visibility caused by the blowing dust. Dust storms are common in the country during dry seasons.
