Schools, Banks, offices, and even the Stock exchange, were shut on Monday after rain storms on Sunday brought the island nation to its knees.
The government issued a statement asking those who do not provide essential services to work from home.
According to the country’s meteorological services, the volume of rainfall on Sunday in the Western region tripled from the average levels collected earlier this month.
It had issued a torrential rain warning a few days earlier warning that “rivers and watercourses are likely to be flooded and urged the public to avoid open areas, hiking, sea travel, and rivers”.
The Port Louis waterfront has been flooded with several vehicles engulfed in the waters.
An accident on a highway in Port Louis resulted in the loss of life of a motorcyclist who was killed on the spot. Reports also say a two-storey house collapsed in the capital, but all occupants managed to escape to safety, unhurt.
In January, services in Mauritius were severely disrupted when cyclone Belal pummelled the capital, disrupting power and water supplies.
