Hoodlums Hijack Niger Protest, Loot Food Truck as Police Calls for End to Protests

Hoodlums took over a peaceful protest taking place along the Suleja-Kaduna Road in Niger state early Thursday. They hijacked and looted a truckload of food.

Niger Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the development, stating that the protesters did not inform the police beforehand.

“There was a protest this morning along Kaduna road, Suleja, and the protest plan was not communicated to the police. It was later discovered to be hijacked by some miscreants who blocked the highway.

“Area commander Suleja, ACP Sani Musa, mobilised patrol teams to the scene, dispersed the protesters and the highway was cleared for free flow of traffic. However, monitoring continues,” he said.

Last week, residents in some parts of Minna, Niger state protested the high cost of living in the country.

Similarly, there have been a series of protests across the nation, including Kano, Abuja, Ogun, and Oyo states. Nigerians continue to express their discontent with the economic hardship under the Tinubu-led government.

Meanwhile, the Ekiti Police has warned residents against participating in the planned protest in the state today, Friday 23, 2024.

News Central TV reported that following a stern warning from the Department of State Services against a planned mass protest by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the organised Labour split after TUC backed out.
