House Committee to Investigate Irregularities in International Passport Issuance in Nigeria

The House of Representatives Committee on Interior has announced its intention to launch an inquiry into the irregularities observed in the issuances of international passport and the utilisation of resident permits in Nigeria.

Ahmed Abdullahi, the Chairman of the House Committee on Interior, revealed this decision during an interactive session with the management staff of IRIS smart technology and Continental Transfer Technique.

Abdullahi, represented by the Vice Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Ganiyu Adele, emphasised that the primary objective of the probe is to identify any deficiencies or anomalies within the system and to institute necessary reforms to enhance its efficiency.

He highlighted the importance of this investigation in maintaining the credibility of immigration processes and ensuring that both citizens and residents receive fair and expedited treatment.

Furthermore, the committee announced its plans to investigate the expatriate quota, citing it as part of its statutory responsibilities. Concerns were raised regarding the lack of accurate data on the number of expatriate residents in Nigeria, underscoring the need for transparency and accountability in immigration procedures.

Emphasising the significance of adhering to international best practices, the committee sent letters to managing directors of companies under its jurisdiction, requesting detailed information on agreements, terms of memorandums of understanding (MOUs), or contracts signed with the Federal Government.

However, the committee expressed disappointment at the absence of managing directors who failed to attend the hearing, highlighting their disregard for parliamentary proceedings. It issued a stern warning that such behaviour would not be tolerated in the future.

With a commitment to upholding transparency and accountability, the House Committee on Interior seeks to address systemic flaws and promote integrity in immigration procedures for the benefit of all stakeholders.
