House of Reps Applauds Tinubu for 50% Electricity Subsidy for Universities, Hospitals

Nigeria’s House of Representatives has praised President Bola Tinubu for approving a 50% electricity subsidy for universities, hospitals, and other tertiary institutions in Nigeria. This decision was lauded by Rep. Abubakar Fulata, Chairman of the House Committee on University Education, who acknowledged the President’s responsiveness to their call for relief.

In a statement from Abuja on Monday, Fulata expressed gratitude for the subsidy, noting that many universities had struggled with soaring electricity tariffs. He highlighted that some institutions, like the University of Jos (UNIJOS), saw their monthly electricity bills rise from approximately N20 million to over N100 million, leading to disconnections by electricity distribution companies.

The subsidy is expected to alleviate the financial burden on these institutions and improve electricity supply. Fulata also commended the President for previous decisions that benefited the education sector, such as removing tertiary institutions from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and reconstituting councils for these institutions.

The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the subsidy in Kaduna, stating that the Ministry of Power is working on the payment modalities. Fulata affirmed that the House would continue collaborating with the executive and other stakeholders to enhance education in Nigeria.
