Nigerian Human Resources Professionals from a number of companies in a range of sectors of the economy are expecting to lose large numbers of their staff as foreign post-graduate courses begin in September 2022. It’s only part of a trend that has seen Nigeria lose a large number of its skilled workers to the labour markets of countries like the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands.
In 2017, a survey by polling company NOI polls showed that 90 per cent of Nigeria’s doctors were looking for opportunities abroad. In 2019, there were over 6,000 medical doctors of Nigerian origin in the United Kingdom. This was a 44 percent increase from 2015 numbers. Over half of the 72,000 doctors registered with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria practice outside the country.
On the August 3, 2022 edition of Business Edge,Samuel Oyekanmi, Senior Research Analyst, Nairametrics mentioned the reasons many Nigerian youths, young and experienced professionals are leaving Africa’s largest economy.
