The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has refuted reports claiming that over 40 people were trapped in the rubble of a collapsed building in the Sabon Lugbe area on Saturday night.
Mukhtar Galadima, Director of the Department of Development Control, explained on Sunday that the structure in question had already been demolished.
Galadima stated that the collapse occurred when scavengers, known locally as “Baban Bola,” stormed the site to collect iron rods from the remains.
“This is to bring to the notice of the Department that the media publication with respect to collapse of a multi-storey building in Lugbe is just a propaganda.
“The subject building is within the site currently under demolition and the subject structure was an uncompleted building which was demolished on Thursday.
“Information gathered is that the site recorded mass influx of scavengers (over 500) in number pulling down and carting away remains of iron rods. Their activities triggered the remains of a demolished slab to fall on them,’ he said.
Initial reports suggested that several people were trapped under the debris after a building collapsed, prompting rescue efforts from emergency responders and concerned residents.
Eyewitnesses at the scene urged the authorities to send additional support to aid in the rescue operation.
This incident follows a similar building collapse in the Kubwa area, where part of a two-story building recently gave way. In that case, four people were rescued, although there were initial fears that others might still be missing.
