Leading global telecom giant Huawei Technologies said Wednesday it has intensified efforts to absorb more Kenyan information communication technology (ICT) professionals by starting its national recruitment drive as its business continues to expand, requiring additional local talent.
Eastern Africa Deputy CEO of Public Affairs Fiona Pan said that Huawei has 35 positions on offer and a further 15 positions with its partners that will involve placing both interns and permanent staff.
In a related development, it launched “Huawei Ambassadors program,” to empower young people into digital future in Egypt and North Africa.
The program intends to boost ICT talents to become Huawei’s ambassadors, sharing acquired knowledge and raising awareness among their peers about Huawei’s activities and training programs inside and outside the campus.
It also targets students to empower them in the field of ICT to foster the state’s sustainable development goals Egypt Vision 2030.
Huawei will provide all necessary support to their ambassadors including an advanced leadership program, in cooperation with the ministry.
At the launch, Assistant to the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research for Digital Transformation, Dr. Hesham Farouk said:
“The Egyptian government is keen to collaborate with the private sector in the field of building digital capacities to enrich students’ capabilities to meet the labor market requirements.”
“Huawei Academy Ambassadors is part of long-term cooperation between the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Huawei Egypt in the field of ICT capacity building,” said Hesham Farouk
Adding her voice, Abednego Kamandi, the principal education officer in Kenya’s Ministry of Education, said that the ICT sector is one of the fastest-growing in the country and provides an avenue for jobs in ICT companies like Huawei as well as opportunities for entrepreneurship.
Kamandi noted that partnerships between private sector players and the government are designed to foster interest and enhance skill sets through internships, apprenticeships and graduate programs like Huawei’s.
The Huawei Kenya Job Fair, in its third year, brought nearly 300 students from universities across Kenya to learn about the job opportunities in the market, meet potential employers and undertake initial interviews for the graduate program.
