Huawei to Launch Africa’s Largest Solar-plus-storage Project in Ghana

Huawei's Android restriction: How it affects the African market

Huawei Digital Power will provide the complete solar PV and energy storage solution for one of the most ambitious projects of its kind in Africa.

Chinese tech company Huawei’s digital and power electronics division has signed a strategic cooperation agreement for the project with German company Meinergy, a developer of solar PV, electric power, and mining projects in Ghana.

This project will generate 1GW of solar PV and store 500MWh in batteries.

Meinergy and Huawei Digital Power have collaborated on previous projects in Ghana, including utility-scale solar, PV and hydropower hybrids, and residential solar and energy storage.

Huawei expects to collaborate further on projects in Africa, including photovoltaic and storage plants, data centers, and cloud computing.

Ghana uses a lot of hydroelectric power, providing more than 40 percent of the country’s electricity.

However, the rest of Ghana’s energy comes from thermal sources, and as of 2019, utility-scale solar generated only 0.6% of its total installed capacity.
