Hundreds of Kenyan Women Protest Alarming Surge in Femicide

Hundreds of women, right groups, activists and politicians took to the streets of Kenya on Saturday, January 27 to protest the disturbing rise in incidents of femicide in the country.

During the peaceful march around the town, the protesters chanted slogans like “Stop killing us!” and “Justice for women!”

The protest comes after cases of extreme violence against women and girls in the country spiked, with so many women losing their lives to femicide.

Following the recent murder of a 20-year-old Kenyan student Rita Waeni, calls for protests against femicide became more urgent.

Several civil society organisations, groups, activists and concerned individuals joined the protest to demand that the issue be addressed.

The Kenyan government issued a statement condemning the recent surge in femicide cases, while establishing its commitment to addressing the pertinent issue.
