President Bola Tinubu has emphasised that his primary focus is on reviving Nigeria’s economy rather than preparing for the 2027 general elections.
Tinubu made this clear during the 2024 South West Assembly of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held in Lagos, which saw key party members endorsing his leadership and expressing support for his potential re-election.
The event, hosted by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was attended by prominent APC figures including former National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, former Ogun State Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba, as well as governors and other leaders from the South-West.
Party leaders discussed the progress of the APC and praised Tinubu’s leadership since his 2023 presidential victory.
Speaking through his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, President Tinubu urged Nigerians to be patient as his government implements challenging but necessary reforms.
The President acknowledged that these policies have led to criticism but insisted they are essential for the long-term prosperity of the nation. He further stated that his focus is not on the next election, but on ensuring a better future for the next generation.
“We acknowledge that our decisions have been tough, but they needed to be taken. The gains are at the end of the tunnel,” the president said.
“That time will come when we will all be happy and thank our government for taking those decisions. Right now, I am not thinking of the next election but about the next generation.
“This is why we are implementing reforms that are long overdue. This is the hallmark of a true leader,” he added.
Former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi delivered the keynote address, where he highlighted the success of the APC since its formation in 2013.
Fayemi urged the party to remain united and focus on creating wealth and employment opportunities, while addressing the socio-economic challenges faced by Nigerians.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also spoke on the importance of unity within the party, emphasising the need to tackle youth restlessness and restore family values. He called on citizens to work hand-in-hand with the government to overcome the nation’s current economic difficulties.
Despite the challenges, party leaders expressed confidence in Tinubu’s leadership and pledged their continued support in guiding Nigeria towards recovery and growth.
