Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni has said he doesn’t need to be in government to live a good life.
Museveni, in his national address after being announced as the winner of the 2021 Presidential election, said he is comfortable and has enough as a farmer.
The 76-year old Ugandan former rebel hero said his main ambition in governance is to eradicate poverty. This, however, has been greeted with criticisms as he was elected for the 7th time, in a space of 35 years.
Critics have said he has never been able to help eradicate poverty in the East African country, more than three decades since he became the leader.
“I don’t need to be in the government to have a good life. I already have a good life as a farmer. My going into leadership was to deal with some historical challenges like people living in poverty in a rich land, ” he said.
Museveni defeated Robert Kyagulanyi, candidate of the National Unity Platform in a keenly contested election. He won 58.6% of the total votes, his lowest since 1996 while Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine won 34.8% of the votes.
Museveni announced a shutdown of the internet barely 24 hours to the election, and denied accreditation to the United States, days before the polls.
