President Bola Tinubu has encouraged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to disregard critics and meddlesome individuals, urging him to remain focused on his mandate to transform the nation’s capital.

Tinubu made these remarks on Tuesday while inaugurating the rehabilitated and refurbished International Conference Centre in Abuja, now renamed the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in his honour.

The President described the renovation as part of his administration’s firm commitment to reform Nigeria’s operational standards to reflect the country’s identity as a people of quality, character, determination, and high spirit.

“I am pleased, Nyesom Wike, that you embody these qualities. Ignore the busybodies and bystanders, regardless of what they say. Keep up your commendable work. You are a transformational leader with the vision, foresight and resolve to succeed,” Tinubu stated.

He reiterated his administration’s belief that modern infrastructure is vital to economic growth and national progress.

Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the President noted, the government aims to revitalise key sectors including transportation, healthcare, education, energy, and urban development, recognising infrastructure as the cornerstone of a thriving and inclusive society.

Tinubu further remarked that the refurbished conference centre reflects Nigeria’s dedication to regional diplomacy, continental trade, and global cooperation — all anchored on prioritising national interests.

Addressing political allies and government officials, the President declared that the facility would not be freely available for social or corporate events.

“You must respect the landlord’s rules. If you want to use this place, you’ll need to pay for it,” he affirmed, referencing an earlier statement by Wike that the use of the halls would incur charges.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Finance and Economy Minister Wale Edun, Justice Minister Lateef Fagbemi, among others.

Wike, a prominent member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former two-term governor of Rivers State, was appointed to the President’s cabinet in August 2023 — a notable development given Tinubu’s affiliation with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Similarly, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), joined the APC-led government in October 2024 as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.
