Following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who had ruled England for the previous 70 years, Prince Charles, her son has been formally crowned King of England.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge revealed the news on Instagram, where Prince Charles was referred to as the next King of England following the Queen’s “peaceful” demise.

According to the official announcement from Prince William and Kate Middleton, “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” and thus “The King and The Queen Consort [Prince Charles and Camilla] will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

It is expected that Charles will be officially proclaimed King on Saturday. This will happen at St James’s Palace in London, in front of a ceremonial body known as the Accession Council.

This is made up of members of the Privy Council – a group of senior MPs, past and present, and peers, as well as some senior civil servants, Commonwealth high commissioners, and the Lord Mayor of London.
