In support of the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ strike, members of the Nigeria Labour Congress embarked on a protest on Tuesday July 26 in Ikeja, the capital of Lagos State.

The demand was made on Tuesday at the solidarity rally by Mrs. Funmi Agnes Sessy, Chairperson of the Lagos Council of the NLC.

Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, criticised the FG’s statements regarding gasoline subsidies and the lack of funding to fix the problems. Falana claimed that the government was ‘Economising the truth’.

The current demonstration provides the NLC with a chance to draw attention to other problems facing the country.

Several of the placards carried by the crowd of protesters as they stormed the street read; “Stop importing gasoline, refine the refineries,” “Nigeria at 60 years of independence, greater famine in the land,” etc.

The Nigeria Labour Congress organised a statewide protest in support of ASUU over the strike that has lasted five months.

In reaction to the strike, operatives from the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were been stationed in key facilities and infrastructure.

Recall that workers in Abuja and the state capitals were instructed to join the demonstration on Monday by the Nigeria Labour Congress.

Also, the National Union of Electricity Employees also joined the NLC in the solidarity protest alongside Academic Staff Union of Universities.
