India: Parliament Considers Renaming Country ‘Bharat’

Reports are making the rounds that India may be officially renamed ‘Bharat’ in a special session of Parliament on September 18. Over the years, there have been demands for a name change for the country.

On Tuesday, the Indian National Congress alleged that a G20 dinner invite described President Droupadi Murmu as the “President of Bharat” and not the “President of India”.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, in one of his series of posts on X (Twitter), confirmed this, adding that the ‘Union of States’ is under assault.

“So the news is indeed true. Rashtrapati Bhawan has sent out an invite for a G20 dinner on September 9th in the name of ‘President of Bharat’ instead of the usual ‘President of India’”

“Now, Article 1 in the Constitution can read: “Bharat, that was India, shall be a Union of States.” But now even this “Union of States” is under assault,” Ramesh claimed.

Ramesh, in another post, said:

“Mr. Modi can continue to distort history and divide India, that is Bharat, that is a Union of States. But we will not be deterred. After all, what is the objective of INDIA parties? It is BHARAT-Bring Harmony, Amity, Reconciliation, And Trust. Judega BHARAT Jeetega INDIA!” He wrote.

The G20 Summit 2023, coming up on Saturday, September 9 to September 10 will be held at the country’s capital in New Delhi, under India’s presidency.

Leaders from the Group of 20 (G20) major economies to grace the occasion include the President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, US President Joe Biden, Russian President Vladimir Putin (who will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov), President Xi Jinping, who will be represented by Premier Li Qiang, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and a host of others.

The Group of Twenty (G20) was formed in 1999. It regularly brings together the world’s largest economies to discuss and coordinate global policy on trade, health, climate, and other issues.
