INEC Asks Nigeria’s Police Chief to Prosecute Adamawa REC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reached a fresh decision following a meeting of all national commissioners held on Tuesday in Abuja.

The commission has written to the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, requesting an investigation and possible prosecution of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Adamawa State, Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari.

This decision comes just 24 hours after INEC had directed the REC to stay away from all activities of the electoral umpire and the election in the state. Festus Okoye, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education stated that at the meeting on April 18, 2023, the commission decided to take the following actions against the Adamawa REC:

  1. Write to the Inspector-General of Police for the immediate investigation and possible prosecution of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Adamawa State, Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari.
  2. Request the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to draw the attention of the appointing authority to the unwholesome behaviour of the REC for further action.
  3. The collation process shall resume at a time to be determined by the Returning Officer.
