The abductors of Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, the Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo state, have demanded a ransom of N500 million, according to a close family source who revealed this on Sunday.
Aziegbemi was kidnapped in Benin City on Friday, March 16, 2024, just a few metres away from his residence while returning from a political meeting with the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki at the State Government House.
Following the incident, the abductors remained silent, causing distress among his family members and associates.
A family member, Sam Ogbeiye, appealed to the kidnappers to spare Aziegbemi’s life and establish contact with the family.
He also urged security operatives to intensify efforts to secure his release unharmed.
However, when contacted, the Edo State Police spokesman, SP. Chidi Nwabuzor, stated that the police authorities were not aware of any ransom demand from the abductors.
“I am not aware of any ransom demand. I can only confirm what I am aware of,” he maintained.
Nwabuzor also mentioned that the State police Commissioner, Funsho Adegboye, had instructed the police tactical team to collaborate with vigilante groups and hunters to conduct a rescue mission and ensure Aziegbemi’s safe return.
