Reports indicate that Insurgents suspected to be Islamist Militants have killed not less than 20 civilians in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday.
It was gathered that the incident occurred on Sunday evening in the village of Kikura, with locals attributing the attack to Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan militia that has killed thousands of civilians in eastern Congo since 2013.
The heavily armed assailants invaded the village around 9pm, shooting sporadically and also setting houses and property ablaze.
It is pertinent to mention that, since late November, Congolese and Ugandan security forces have conducted combined operations against the ADF, but the group, which has professed allegiance to Islamic State, has continued to massacre scores of civilians each month.
Congo’s army spokesman, Capitaine Antony Mwalushayi, said it took some time for soldiers in the region to receive Intelligence about the Militants were unleashing mayhem on locals.
“We cannot be discouraged because the objective of the enemy is to discourage us, to separate us from the population,” he said.
